THE 2010 CONSOLE MOVE

Since 1908 the organ has sat behind the choir stalls and since the 2004-2005 rebuild in the position shown in these photo's. This made it difficult for the Organist to know what was going on in the main body of the church. It was also difficult sitting so far away from the pipes and with them sounding out into the body of the church away from the console, to balance the organ. Since 2008 when the 10.15 "All Together " service was established the various bands took a greater part in the service and it was difficult for the organist to switch from piano to organ and indeed to balance the organ with the band so that the organ could become part of the band. During recitals it has been difficult to set up CCTV so that the audience could actually see the recital organists playing and watch their skills. Hinckley Choral Union who regularly use St Mary's for their performances were having to set up CCTV between the conductor and the organist so that some of their major performances could be organ accompanied.

This picture shows where the console has been removed. A decision as to what this space will be used for has yet to be made but it has the potential to give another small meeting room or extend the vestry for larger groups to meet.

Christopher Jones has rewired the entire console including making the circuit boards for the stop actions. He has upgraded the power supply. This means the wiring is now very neat and functions on the organ which never fully worked from the rebuild are functioning fully. This is Chris's first organ project and has been very successful. Thanks to MODE lighting (Ware, Hertfordshire) and some of Chris's work colleagues there, who have put in time to assist with this project and the software to run it.
