We now feel we are ready to apply formally for the above award. Michelle has gathered all evidence of St Mary’s being an active eco congregational church. The Eco congregation body have advised Michelle to submit a letter giving a brief outline of what changes we have made and what impact it has had. They will then visit us at St Mary’s Church to make an assessment on whether we have achieved all the requirements, if not they will advise us accordingly. Michelle to send letter ASAP. The eco congregation have required a contact name for their records. Michelle and Bev agreed to have their names used for this. Church Roof Duncan has had a meeting with the PCT (Parish Church Council) regarding the fixing of solar panels to the church roof. The PCT have required detailed financial information which wasn’t available at the time. Duncan has therefore arranged a second meeting to submit the information they require. New Members Beverley Buswell confirmed that she has sent minutes to Alan Kidner and also gave details of tonight’s meeting. David Shaw has also expressed an interest in the group and would like to attend. Bev to send an email and attach minutes. Combined Meeting Beverley informed everyone that Andrew Quigley was attending St Catherine’s environment meeting this evening and would not be able to attend. However, Brian and Andrew have suggested the possibility of a joint meeting in the future – which will be helpful for both groups. Andrew has said Tuesdays and Thursdays are good days to meet. Could we go for the first week in March? It would be great if everyone could attend? Film of Interest Andrew mentioned he has a DVD called, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ regarding eco issues. Andrew has a projector at home where he is willing to arrange a screening at his house on a separate day from the meeting. We could arrange a date for this at the next meeting. Bev to liaise with members of the group and Andrew. Jane Green mentioned that HBBC are promoting nappy week between Saturday, 11-18th March where a free coffee morning will be held to promote real nappies. Hopefully, this will take place at St Mary’s Church Hall. Other events include Composting in (May) and Recycle Week in (June). Details of these events will follow nearer the time. Jane also informed us that HBBC are doing well meeting their recycling targets and how this process is quantified. Carrier Bags Jane also informed us that Morrison’s will now receive carrier bags for recycling, as does Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s. The COOP use bio-degradable bags which decompose into the earth without any harmful effects. Day trips/Visits The group also discussed arranging a visit to Ryton Organic Gardens and Eco House in Leicester when the weather gets warmer around the end of April or beginning of May. Next Meeting to be confirmed. |

It was agreed for everyone to promote the event as much as possible.
Brian mentioned that we will not be meeting again until after the event. Church Roof and Photo-Voltate – energy producing panels Brain updated the group on the church roof where ‘photo-voltate’ (not sure on spelling) panels are to be installed. Ben said the next window to apply for a grant will be in December. Duncan spoke to a company called Solstice who can provide the panels at a cost of around £25,000. They will need a planning proposal, with a photo of the roof and the floor heat. Do we want the panels placed on the roof integral or non-integral? What will be the maximum output? Is the church VAT registered? Brian agreed to contact the architect and find out. Ben said that planning permission may be an issue as the church is a grade 1 listed building. However, he said the planners at the council advised that the panels should not be visible from far away and that we need to have a plan ready before applying for the grant. This will allow the council to give advice. Brian to inform and contact the Diocese and Advisory Committee on having the panels installed and the issue of planning permission. Eco-Congregation Award
Other Business Jo mentioned that Trish and Jeff Bannister have converted their house to be entirely environmentally friendly.
Ben informed the group of various energy alternatives to fossil fuels such as Ground Source Heating where he has produced a leaflet called, ‘Shallow Ground’ and also Bio Fuel. Minutes of St Mary’s Environment Group Meeting Monday 15th May 2006 Apologies; Bev, Charles. Present; Ben, Michelle, Joanne, Brian, Andrew, Duncan. Brian wants the assembly to know that Eleanor is using REAL NAPPIES! Contrary to our information, Andrew will continue to come to our SMEG meetings! YBGREEN We’ve settled on the name YBGREEN for the 30th September eco-conference.Jo is to check the availability of the church hall for the children’s part of the conference.Michelle is in discussions with the science department at JCC about the children’s activity ‘What can we do to save the world’.Jo to contact Jess Slee urgently about getting local food producers to come and have a stall on the day. Bev is looking into eco-burials and how we can present this topic at the eco-conference. Bev is looking also at composting and recycling and how this can be presented/are we getting a speaker? Energy Audit Ben presented his energy efficiency audit findings to the group. He said the church was pretty efficient. Everyone’s main concern was the chancel area which does get very cold and drafty, Ben advised that because of the circumstances, the best way to solve this would be to but some kind of radiant/convector heaters up near the ceiling. Secondary glazing would help but it would need to be bespoke and probably quite expensive. It was suggested draft proofing the door in this area may help.Ben suggested we could quite easily install solar panels to produce all the hot water needed.Ben was going to look into weather we could get a 60% grant to fund PV tiles on the south roof which would generate enough electricity to supply the church and some left to sell back to the grid. Rants available from the Low Carbon Building Programme.Bens favoured source of renewable energy was biomass, a carbon neutral fuel with a system like those that have been installed in Newark schools.Ben, Brian and Duncan to have a separate meeting about where to go from here. Other Matters Jo to chase Jeff about information/pictures the brigade have about any eco-activities the children have done in that group. Ben mentioned the fuel poverty programme which helps families who cannot afford energy bills, the trust will come and do a free of charge energy audit on the house and help with updating and repairing inefficient equipment. Should we promote this some way? Also could we promote Bens environmental education stall on the last Friday of the month, in town.
>Next meeting agreed for June 19th 7.45 at MJC house. |

Date: Wednesday, 10th 2005 August 2005 Venue: Meeting held at St. Mary’s Coffee Shop Attendees Apologies Andrew Quigley Charles Legatt Brian Davis Jo Eaton-Taylor Beverley Buswell Duncan Sluce Jane Green Michelle Juno-Craven Date of next meeting: Monday, 12th September at 7.45pm, St Mary’s Coffee Bar. Minutes of the previous meeting were discussed whereby the following was agreed. All action points are highlighted in bold as usual. Jenni and Peter Harris were introduced to the group and welcomed. St Mary’s Parish Church Website Jenni and Peter Harris are responsible for the new church website and have already set up information and details concerning SMEG. This can be found under the subject groups. After some discussion it was agreed that Duncan will coordinate with Jenni on how the layout of the SMEG web page is to be organised. It was also agreed that each of us would write up a short paragraph on following subjects (see below) where this paragraph will be displayed on the website with a list of good website links. Each person is to email this to Duncan at his email address:
Peter informed the group that both digital and hard copies of photographs and pictures can be put on the site. However, Peter asked us to bear in mind that complexed images can take up a lot of web space. Jenni asked that any amendments that were required are to be sent her where she’ll update the web site on a monthly basis. Duncan will be coordinating any amendments. Holidays - flights and air pollution Michelle informed us that she was having difficulties finding information that was unbiased on the above subject. Andrew mentioned that aeroplanes are responsible for only 4% emissions it was actually cars that were bigger offenders! Jane will ask Ben Agasi to forward information on this area. Duncan said he would send Michelle info on holidays, Agenda 21 - the 1992 Earth summit including info on air pollution and air quality. Real Nappies Brian said that it was disappointing that the Real Nappies are not selling very well at the church. Jane informed the group that there will be a real nappy stall at the next Farmer’s market being held in September. Need to find ways to promote the nappies. The Big Decision Folder Information on this needs to be forwarded to Bev to coordinate into a folder so that there is a hard copy in the church as well as it being accessible via the web site. Eco-congregation Award Michelle is continuing to compile information for the folder and has asked members of the group to forward any evidence to herself. Recycling and refuse collection This was discussed briefly between group members where there has been arguments from the public to implement a weekly bin collection. Bev mentioned there is an article in this week’s Hinckley Herald and Journal Newspaper, page 6 titled “Weekly wheelie call is rejected”. Brian asked Andrew if he could write a letter of support regarding waste management in the Hinckley and Bosworth area to the HBBC. Andrew agreed to do this. Jane mentioned that the HBBC have met their government target of 34% to recycle. 75% of the borough use compost bins. 44,000 properties use blue boxes. Further figures can be found in the HBBC Bulletin which has recently been posted to homes in the borough. Plastics Jane said she would forward Duncan details on waste watch which included info on the different grades of recyclable plastic. Newsletter It was agreed that Duncan would make an announcement each week on what SMEG is currently involved with and also provide informative advice on how the congregation can be more environmentally friendly. This advice is also to be included in the weekly newsletter. Greeting cards Michelle asked about whether greeting cards can be recycled. Jane informed her that WHSmith will be taking cards to be recycled and proceeds will be forwarded to the Woodland Trust. Electric Hand Driers Andrew asked whether St Mary’s used paper towels or hand driers in the conveniences. As paper towels aren’t environmentally friendly. Paper towels produce waste that can’t be recycled, very expensive and affects trees. Andrew sourced his information from The (Saturday) Guardian Newspaper, where there is an environmental column. Michelle mentioned that she has known companies to give hand driers free. Michelle is to price up and contact companies who may be able to provide hand driers to the church at cost or free. Composting Workshop Bev is to contact Nicola Blight on organising a workshop at the vicarage so that member of St Mary’s can attend. Cycle Stands Funds have been received. However, Charles is awaiting final confirmation from the HBBC regarding planning permission. It takes around 6-8 weeks for the company to deliver the stands. Bev to send Charles’s email to Jane who will advise Charles. County Service, Caring for the Environment Brian said that other faiths have been invited to this service being held on October 9th at 11.00AM. It is being themed on caring for the environment where other faiths are being asked to read scripture concerning care for creation. Brian asked whether HBBC could produce a display in the church. Jane suggested contacting Tim Webster from Leicestershire County Hall and Environ on whether they have any display material we could use. Brian also announced that Westfield School are attending who have won the green flag award and will be giving a presentation at the service. It was mentioned that Hastings High School is currently applying for this award too. Re Useable Bags Jo is to contact Fair Trade on getting information on the cost of re useable bags to sell at Church. Jane brought along some guides on waste minimisation which was produced by the Leicestershire County Council. There is also a tear off slip which can be sent off to receive a free re useable bag. ECOVER Products Jo has organised the following. The coffee bar is now using the above products which aren’t harmful to the environment. Jo has arranged for the natural balance health shop to supply these products to St Mary’s. We can then provide these eco-products to members of the public you may wish to make an order. ECOHOUSE Brian said that Ann Tuck who attended last month’s meeting had given him some leaflets on the ECOHOUSE which is situated in Leicester and shows how to enjoy a green and healthy lifestyle. He passed these around to the group. Brian also brought a milk bottle of the future for the group to see. It is bio- degradable and less bulky. Details of the ecohouse can be found under www.environ.org.uk. Recycled paper This is on offer at the church for members to purchase. However, it isn’t logistically possible to supply to all local churches. Powergen grant Duncan informed the group that he is continuing to investigate Powergen’s claim of offering grants to local environmentally groups. Any other business Bev asked if Ben Agasi could be invited from the HBBC. Jane to invite Ben to the next meeting. Andrew asked the group which was the most environmentally friendly, using dishwashers or washing up by hand?
