WELCOME TO ST
MARY’S AN OPEN CHURCH

GUIDE BOOK
INTRODUCTION
This booklet is very much about St Mary’s as a building and its history.
I think you will agree that there is much here to interest the visitor.
It is a fine old
building, listed as Grade 2*, truly the jewel in Hinckley’s crown. But
as you walk round you need to understand that St Mary’s is also an open
church, aiming
to welcome everyone in the spirit of Jesus Christ, seven days a week. I
was inducted as Vicar in October, 1991 and since May 1992 we have kept
St
Mary’s open every day, and have done much to make the building welcoming
and useable. We try to be a community church for all ages: our
over-riding aim is to love and
care for one another, and reach out to others, with the love of God. We
welcome everyone, especially those who come in distress, seeking comfort
and hope. However busy the rest of the church building is, the Lady
Chapel in the south transept is usually reserved for private prayer.
So we welcome you
to St Mary’s, a living church in the heart of the community.

St. Mary’s Mission Statement: We are an open church, aiming to make
God’s love real through worship, and by being a welcoming community
where we try to care every day for everyone.

PRAYER
written by John Cole Galloway, M.A., Vicar of Hinckley, taken from the
Preface he wrote to his ‘Hinckley Sermons’ 1785
Through faith may we build our ship,
Through hope may we hoist our sails,
But it is charity and good works alone
which can waft us into the haven of endless and increasing felicity,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
THANKS
to all those who have helped in any way with this new Guide to St
Mary’s. Many people
have had a hand in it somewhere and we are grateful to them all. We also
wish to record
our thanks to AWARDS FOR ALL – Lottery Grants for Local Groups. Their
grant covered
most of the production costs, which means that all proceeds from the
sale of the
Guides will go to St Mary’s Restoration Fund. We are also grateful for
help from the
Hinckley & Rugby Building Society and Hinckley and Bosworth Borough
Council
(Arts Budget). HARD COPY ON SALE IN CHURCH Printed by
