letter in church magazine
from choir master Peter Harris November 2010
A few months ago I
was invited to reform St Mary’s choir to sing at the communion
service held in the evening on the first Sunday of each month.
Currently we have a membership of some 20 people spread over
Soprano’s, Alto’s and Tenor’s. The discerning amongst you will have
noticed that there is no mention of Bass’s ( they are the men with
the low deep voices!!!) and this is due to the fact that we at
present have none.
The choir has made
a great contribution to the worship on Sunday evenings, and a month
ago were asked to increase their commitment, and sing one morning
communion a month. To date we have performed a wide ranging
repertoire of music from both traditional and modern genres which
the choir have tremendously enjoyed and judging from the very
positive feedback received, the congregation too, albeit that we
have had to keep the arrangements very simple due to our limited
resources.
We meet on a Friday
evening at 7-30 pm for an hours practice each week, and have
committed to singing at the first Sunday evening service, and the
third Sunday morning service until the end of the year, plus
additional Advent and Christmas services.
As a choir I feel
it is not only important to share in music making , but also on a
social level, and to this end the choir will be going out on the 19th
November for a Christmas meal at the Longshoot. I intend to see that
social events take place on a regular basis.
If anyone would
like to join this friendly, committed group of people, then please
contact me, either on 01455 440932, or by email at
p.harris@ntlworld.com where you will be warmly welcomed or just
turn up on any Friday evening at 7-30pm (except the 19th
November). At this point in time I have to say I would really
welcome enquires particularly from gentleman wishing to sing bass so
that at long last we can get 4 part music onto the repertoire again,
and if you should be interested or know of someone who might be,
please let me know
